Hello friends. August and July were really heavy months for me. Work had me pulling my hair out, I was putting in a lot of hours at the animal sanctuary I volunteer at, and I was planning for a 5 day visit from my mom.
Unsurprisingly, I hit a massive writing slump mid-July. As in, I haven’t even thought about writing since then. I did a little bit of planning for my next novel but literally nothing else. This week the wind is back in my sails, thank the gods. I’ve been working on a short story for the weekly Reedsy writing contest to kind of kick myself back into gear. It’s due tomorrow so I’ll need to hit the road hard and heavy today to get it done.
A month or so ago I shared my extremely ambitious writing goals for the year. So far I am not where I want to be at all, so I asked myself how I can be held more accountable for my goals. So I made a spreadsheet. Yes, I’m one of those people that makes spreadsheets for everything. Something about Virgos. My husband is the same way.
Anyway, I made a spreadsheet for myself so I can log what I’ve done every day to help me achieve my writing goals. I started filling it in yesterday so it’s not much to look at yet but I’m hoping I can stay on top of my goals. I also put a post it on my monitor. It’s part of a collection of 5 post its. Maybe in a future blog we can discuss my post its, haha.
Whatchya Been Reading?
In addition to my writing slump I was also in a bit of a reading slump. Work was so stressful and hectic that by the end of the day my brain could not possibly function. Plus there was a new season of Project Runway on Hulu and girl you know I got to get on that.
Anyway, reading took a back burner until after my EXTREMELY relaxing vacation. Once I was back to my normal, stress free self I was able to pick up my book again.
I finally finished Red Seas over Red Skies by Scott Lynch, which is the second novel in the Gentlemen Bastards series. I LOVED the first book and jumped immediately into the second. I like this one a lot too but it was a lot different than the first. I found the pacing to be a lot slower, and it felt like the beginning of the book dragged quite a bit in order to expand the story line into two books (or more?) rather than one. The second book concludes really quickly and I think he could of focused more on the beginning than the end, but I still really enjoyed it. I love the characters so much.
Now I’m reading the 5th book in The Wheel of Time series, The Fires of Heaven. I’ve read three others this year and god almighty do I love this series. I love it so much. Every time I start a new book it’s like slipping into my favorite PJs. Something about the story is just so comfortable, enjoyable, and familiar to me. I’m really enjoying the 5th book so far but why wouldn’t I?
So that’s all I’ve got. I’m just plugging away at writing and enjoying my book.
Oh yea, we got a dog too. Here she is:
Her name is Rigby and she’s a pretty awesome dog if I do say so myself. We got her from a local rescue. The cats are getting used to her just fine but I think they are still a little mad at us.
And since I promised a cat in every post, here’s Cheeto:
Until next time…
