Hello friends. Have I got an exciting blog for you today, and just in time to prepare you for the long, boring month of NaNo updates.
A did a few exciting things this week/weekend. First, I upgraded my WordPress to a premium account, so now I have my own domain! Now if you want to check in with me, you can go to papercatsblog.com. Also, no more ads! Yippee!
I also attended my very first book and writing conference this weekend. I made a fun day trip of it, taking a lunch break at one of my favorite places. I got a Beyond Burger. It was totally worth the 15 minute walk each way!
First I attended a self publishing seminar. I haven’t talked about this much, but I think I’m going to self publish my first book. A. Because I have a marketing background and I think I can easily market myself and my book and B. Because its not my normal genre and I don’t want to get with an agent only to switch my whole platform from contemporary fiction to low/high fantasy.
Then I went to lunch, which was delicious.
Afterwards I had some time to kill so I went to the author pavilion, met some authors and got a few books signed. It was really cool to see everyone there and maybe when I have a book out I can go myself! That would be really fun.
Next I planned on going to another writing seminar about writing a book proposal but when I got there the tiny room was completely full! I was so bummed. Since I had some time to kill, I ducked into an author panel about the Great American Reads list. It was really interesting.
After that I went to my last seminar about working with an agent. The presenter was an agent herself and to be honest the whole thing turned me off of traditional publishing for my first book even more. She was pretty rude and acted like working with her and even being in her seminar was some sort of privilege. Pass.
It was a lot of fun. I wanted to go last year but unfortunately I was out of town for a wedding. I mean, that’s not REALLY unfortunate but I wish it had been on another weekend.
New Blog Series
So after I did the book tag last week I got to thinking about a better way to organize my bookshelves. If you remember, I have a large Billy bookcase from Ikea and a smaller one in the living room. I liked the idea of having a whole case dedicated to just my TBR or books I haven’t read yet, so I moved all my unread books to the smaller bookcase. I was nervous the change wouldn’t work, maybe they wouldn’t all fit, but everything fit perfectly!
Looking at the new TBR case, I realized that I have a great selection of books in my library that I’ve wanted to get to but haven’t made time for. I decided to dedicate a few months of the year to Shopping My Stash.
My Shop My Stash months will be any month with 30 days, so April, June, September and November. That means that next month, if I have any time to read after NaNo and other projects, I’ll only be reading books that I own, physical or digital. I’m pretty excited!
For next month I think I want to get to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami, and To the Lighthouse by Virgina Woolf. Maybe I’ll even have time for a few more.
Thanks for reading friends. Here’s your weekly cat picture:
